And so gradually it did; and perhaps to dissipate the somber impression which the spectacle had left upon me, she became unusually animated and chatty; and so we got home.
“Don’t desert me,” she said, and her eyes filled with tears. “I am alone, utterly alone.”
4. The weak case against prisoner on general facts unduly prejudiced by evidence of motive.
22:1 [hgb] 提 幔 人 以 利 法 回 答 说 ， [kjv] Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, [bbe] Then Eliphaz the Temanite made answer and said,22:2 [hgb] 人 岂 能 使 神 有 益 呢 ？ [kjv] Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? [bbe] Is it possible for a man to be of profit to God? No, for a man's wisdom is only of profit to himself.22:3 [hgb] 你 为 人 公 义 ， 岂 叫 全 能 者 喜 悦 呢 ？ [kjv] Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect? [bbe] Is it of any interest to the Ruler of all that you are upright? or is it of use to him that your ways are without sin?22:4 [hgb] 岂 是 因 你 敬 畏 他 ， 就 责 备 你 ， 审 判 你 吗 ？ [kjv] Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment? [bbe] Is it because you give him honour that he is sending punishment on you and is judging you?22:5 [hgb] 你 的 罪 恶 岂 不 是 大 吗 ？ [kjv] Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite? [bbe] Is not your evil-doing great? and there is no end to your sins.22:6 [hgb] 因 你 无 故 强 取 弟 兄 的 物 为 当 头 ， 剥 去 贫 寒 人 的 衣 服 。 [kjv] For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. [bbe] For you have taken your brother's goods when he was not in your debt, and have taken away the clothing of those who have need of it.22:7 [hgb] 困 乏 的 人 ， 你 没 有 给 他 水 喝 。 [kjv] Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. [bbe] You do not give water to the tired traveller, and from him who has no food you keep back bread.22:8 [hgb] 有 能 力 的 人 就 得 地 土 。 [kjv] But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. [bbe] For it was the man with power who had the land, and the man with an honoured name who was living in it.22:9 [hgb] 你 打 发 寡 妇 空 手 回 去 ， 折 断 孤 儿 的 膀 臂 。 [kjv] Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. [bbe] You have sent widows away without hearing their cause, and you have taken away the support of the child who has no father.22:10 [hgb] 因 此 ， 有 网 罗 环 绕 你 ， 有 恐 惧 忽 然 使 你 惊 惶 。 [kjv] Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee; [bbe] For this cause nets are round your feet, and you are overcome with sudden fear.22:11 [hgb] 或 有 黑 暗 蒙 蔽 你 ， 并 有 洪 水 淹 没 你 。 [kjv] Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee. [bbe] Your light is made dark so that you are unable to see, and you are covered by a mass of waters.22:12 [hgb] 神 岂 不 是 在 高 天 吗 ？ [kjv] Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! [bbe] Is not God as high as heaven? and see the stars, how high they are!22:13 [hgb] 你 说 ， 神 知 道 什 么 ？ [kjv] And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? [bbe] And you say, What knowledge has God? is he able to give decisions through the deep dark?22:14 [hgb] 密 云 将 他 遮 盖 ， 使 他 不 能 看 见 。 [kjv] Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven. [bbe] Thick clouds are covering him, so that he is unable to see; and he is walking on the arch of heaven.22:15 [hgb] 你 要 依 从 上 古 的 道 吗 ？ [kjv] Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? [bbe] Will you keep the old way by which evil men went?22:16 [hgb] 他 们 未 到 死 期 ， 忽 然 除 灭 。 [kjv] Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood: [bbe] Who were violently taken away before their time, who were overcome by the rush of waters:22:17 [hgb] 他 们 向 神 说 ， 离 开 我 们 吧 。 [kjv] Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? [bbe] Who said to God, Go away from us; and, What is the Ruler of all able to do to us?22:18 [hgb] 哪 知 ， 神 以 美 物 充 满 他 们 的 房 屋 。 [kjv] Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. [bbe] Though he made their houses full of good things: but the purpose of the evil-doers is far from me!22:19 [hgb] 义 人 看 见 他 们 的 结 局 就 欢 喜 。 [kjv] The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. [bbe] The upright saw it and were glad: and those who had done no wrong made sport of them,22:20 [hgb] 说 ， 那 起 来 攻 击 我 们 的 果 然 被 剪 除 ， 其 余 的 都 被 火 烧 灭 。 [kjv] Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth. [bbe] Saying, Truly, their substance is cut off, and their wealth is food for the fire.22:21 [hgb] 你 要 认 识 神 ， 就 得 平 安 。 [kjv] Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. [bbe] Put yourself now in a right relation with him and be at peace: so will you do well in your undertakings.22:22 [hgb] 你 当 领 受 他 口 中 的 教 训 ， 将 他 的 言 语 存 在 心 里 。 [kjv] Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. [bbe] Be pleased to take teaching from his mouth, and let his words be stored up in your heart.22:23 [hgb] 你 若 归 向 全 能 者 ， 从 你 帐 棚 中 远 除 不 义 ， 就 必 得 建 立 。 [kjv] If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. [bbe] If you come back to the Ruler of all, making yourself low before him; if you put evil far away from your tents;22:24 [hgb] 要 将 你 的 珍 宝 丢 在 尘 土 里 ， 将 俄 斐 的 黄 金 丢 在 溪 河 石 头 之 间 。 [kjv] Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. [bbe] And put your gold in the dust, even your gold of Ophir among the rocks of the valleys;22:25 [hgb] 全 能 者 就 必 为 你 的 珍 宝 ， 作 你 的 宝 银 。 [kjv] Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. [bbe] Then the Ruler of all will be your gold, and his teaching will be your silver;22:26 [hgb] 你 就 要 以 全 能 者 为 喜 乐 ， 向 神 仰 起 脸 来 。 [kjv] For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God. [bbe] For then you will have delight in the Ruler of all, and your face will be lifted up to God.22:27 [hgb] 你 要 祷 告 他 ， 他 就 听 你 。 [kjv] Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. [bbe] You will make your prayer to him, and be answered; and you will give effect to your oaths.22:28 [hgb] 你 定 意 要 作 何 事 ， 必 然 给 你 成 就 。 [kjv] Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. [bbe] Your purposes will come about, and light will be shining on your ways.22:29 [hgb] 人 使 你 降 卑 ， 你 仍 可 说 ， 必 得 高 升 。 [kjv] When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. [bbe] For God makes low those whose hearts are lifted up, but he is a saviour to the poor in spirit.22:30 [hgb] 人 非 无 辜 ， 神 且 要 搭 救 他 。 [kjv] He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands. [bbe] He makes safe the man who is free from sin, and if your hands are clean, salvation will be yours.
And in the morning the deer came, and bells ringing on her, under the windows, and called out, "The hunt is here, where are the huntsmen and the hounds?" Then Bill got up and got his horse and his hound, and followed her over hills and hollows till they came to the wood, and there he saw nothing but the mud-wall cabin and the old woman sitting by the fire, and she bade him stop the night there, and gave him two ribs of hair to tie his horse and his hound with. But Bill was wittier than Jack was, and before he went out, he threw the ribs of hair into the fire secretly. When he came in the old woman said, "Your brother killed my three sons, and I killed him, and I'll kill you along with him." And she put her gloves on, and they began the fight, and then Bill called out, "Help, horse." "Squeeze hair," called the old woman; "I can't squeeze, I'm in the fire," said the hair. And the horse came in and gave her a blow of his hoof. "Help, hound," said Bill then. "Squeeze, hair," said the old woman; "I can't, I'm in the fire," said the second hair. Then the bound put his teeth in her, and Bill brought her down, and she cried for mercy. "Give me my life," she said, "and I'll tell you where you'll get your brother again, and his hound and horse." "Where's that?" said Bill. "Do you see that rod over the fire?" said she; "take it down and go outside the door where you'll see three green stones, and strike them with the rod, for they are your brother, and his horse and hound, and they'll come to life again." "I will, but I'll make a green stone of you first," said Bill, and he cut off her head with his sword.
There was a St. Patrick’s Day shamrock favor in the pocket that was labelled:
"I'd just as soon stay here, I think, Jimmy."
“I fear our assistance could under any circumstances do him little good. There are forces at work here which are beyond human intervention. Besides, there is no alternative. We have, apparently, no possible clue as to the direction which they have taken, and for us to wander aimlessly over the moor in the darkness would be to waste the strength which may be more profitably used in the morning. It will be daylight by five o’clock. In an hour or so we can walk over the hill together and get Fullarton’s dog.”
We may impute to the same general cause (the greater need of protection for the female, owing to her weaker flight, greater exposure to attack, and supreme importance)— the fact of the colours of female insects being so very generally duller and less conspicuous than those of the other sex. And that it is chiefly due to this cause rather than to what Mr. Darwin terms “sexual selection” appears to be shown by the otherwise inexplicable fact, that in the groups which have a protection of any kind independent of concealment, sexual differences of colour are either quite wanting or slightly developed. The Heliconid? and Danaid?, protected by a disagreeable flavour, have the females as bright and conspicuous as the males, and very rarely differing at all from them. The stinging Hymenoptera have the two sexes equally well coloured. The Carabid?, the Coccinellid?, Chrysomelid?, and the Telephori have both sexes equally conspicuous, and seldom differing in colours. The brilliant Curculios, which are protected by their hardness, are brilliant in both sexes. Lastly, the glittering Cetoniad? and Buprestid?, which seem to be protected by their hard and polished coats, their rapid motions, and peculiar habits, present few sexual differences of colour, while sexual selection has often manifested itself by structural differences, such as horns, spines, or other processes.
“Nonsense, my dear; I feel better at this moment than I have done for a month. Tomorrow I shall come out again. I want to be where I can see this clever gentleman.”
[kjv] Let brotherly love continue. [bbe] Go on loving your brothers in the faith. [kjv] Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. [bbe] Take care to keep open house: because in this way some have had angels as their guests, without being conscious of it. 13:3 [hgb] 你 们 要 记 念 被 捆 绑 的 人 ， 好 像 与 他 们 同 受 捆 绑 ， 也 要 记 念 遭 苦 害 的 人 ， 想 到 自 己 也 在 肉 身 之 内 。 [kjv] Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. [bbe] Keep in mind those who are in chains, as if you were chained with them, and those who are in trouble, as being yourselves in the body. [kjv] Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. [bbe] Let married life be honoured among all of you and not made unclean; for men untrue in married life will be judged by God. 13:5 [hgb] 你 们 存 心 不 可 贪 爱 钱 财 。 [kjv] Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. [bbe] Be free from the love of money and pleased with the things which you have; for he himself has said, I will be with you at all times. [kjv] So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. [bbe] So that we say with a good heart, The Lord is my helper; I will have no fear: what is man able to do to me? 13:7 [hgb] 从 前 引 导 你 们 ， 传 神 之 道 给 你 们 的 人 ， 你 们 要 想 念 他 们 ， 效 法 他 们 的 信 心 ， 留 心 看 他 们 为 人 的 结 局 。 [kjv] Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. [bbe] Keep in mind those who were over you, and who gave you the word of God; seeing the outcome of their way of life, let your faith be like theirs. [kjv] Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. [bbe] Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. [kjv] Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. [bbe] Do not be turned away by different strange teachings, because it is good for your hearts to be made strong by grace, and not by meats, which were of no profit to those who took so much trouble over them. [kjv] We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. [bbe] We have an altar from which those priests who are servants in the Tent may not take food. [kjv] For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. [bbe] For the bodies of the beasts whose blood is taken into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin are burned outside the circle of the tents. [kjv] Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. [bbe] For this reason Jesus was put to death outside the walls, so that he might make the people holy by his blood. [kjv] Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. [bbe] Let us then go out to him outside the circle of the tents, taking his shame on ourselves. [kjv] For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. [bbe] For here we have no fixed resting-place, but our search is for the one which is to come. [kjv] By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. [bbe] Let us then make offerings of praise to God at all times through him, that is to say, the fruit of lips giving witness to his name. [kjv] But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. [bbe] But go on doing good and giving to others, because God is well-pleased with such offerings. [kjv] Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. [bbe] Give ear to those who are rulers over you, and do as they say: for they keep watch over your souls, ready to give an account of them; let them be able to do this with joy and not with grief, because that would be of no profit to you. [kjv] Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly. [bbe] Make prayers for us, for we are certain that our hearts are free from the sense of sin, desiring the right way of life in all things. [kjv] But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner. [bbe] I make this request more strongly, in the hope of coming back to you more quickly. 13:20 [hgb] 但 愿 赐 平 安 的 神 ， 就 是 那 凭 永 约 之 血 使 群 羊 的 大 牧 人 我 主 耶 稣 ， 从 死 里 复 活 的 神 ， [kjv] Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, [bbe] Now may the God of peace, who made that great keeper of his flock, even our Lord Jesus, come back from the dead through the blood of the eternal agreement, 13:21 [hgb] 在 各 样 善 事 上 ， 成 全 你 们 ， 叫 你 们 遵 行 他 的 旨 意 ， 又 借 着 耶 稣 基 督 在 你 们 心 里 行 他 所 喜 悦 的 事 。 [kjv] Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. [bbe] Make you full of every good work and ready to do all his desires, working in us whatever is pleasing in his eyes through Jesus Christ; and may the glory be given to him for ever and ever. [kjv] And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words. [bbe] But, brothers, take kindly the words which I have said for your profit; for I have not sent you a long letter. [kjv] Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you. [bbe] Our brother Timothy has been let out of prison; and if he comes here in a short time, he and I will come to you together. [kjv] Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you. [bbe] Give words of love from me to those who are rulers over you, and to all the saints. Those who are in Italy send you their love. [kjv] Grace be with you all. Amen. [bbe] May grace be with you all.
“I want it dreadfully,” said Comus, sulkily, “and you’ve heaps of other things to put bread-and-butter in.”
"The Stockton mansion! If that gets going we can't put that out with our little engine."
Shandon said that he had just imprisoned himself; but what was he to do? How were they to retrace their steps? He felt his responsibility, and his hand grasped the telescope. The doctor, with folded arms, kept silent; he was contemplating the walls of ice, the medium altitude of which was over 300 feet. A foggy dome remained suspended above the gulf. It was at this instant that Bolton addressed his speech to the commander.
Perhaps, a long while after such a grief,--it is always "perhaps" in a great crisis, though the certainty is ours if we will but grasp it,--perhaps the hidden meaning of the sorrow steals gently into our softened hearts. We see, as in a vision, a new light by which to work; we rise, cast off the out-grown shell, and build us a more stately mansion, in which to dwell till God makes that home also too small to hold the ever-growing soul!
